Walk for Peace

Every day in the media we here about the latest international flash point, racial & cultural tensions, domestic violence, social media bullying the list goes on. It’s like out world is going mad, we feel we have no control over out future, we’re mere human flotsam & jetsam. I want to turn these negatives into a positive! I want our communities to come together in solidarity too talk about these issues & to walk together as one.

Solidarity is an invitation to be mighty!

UN WORLD OCEANS DAY

Christopher Woodthorpe, the UN Representative of the UN in Australia came to Adelaide and spoke to school assemblies at both Kilkenny and Fulham North Primary Schools about World Ocean Day on 8 June.

He emphasised the accumulation of rubbish in the oceans, particularly with the problem of discarded plastics which are very slow to degrade, and are a hazard to the environment.


COOKING PULSES AT KILKENNY PRIMARY SCHOOL

The UN Year of Pulses has been celebrated by the cooking classes at the Kilkenny Primary School during 2016.

While the UN representative in Australia and UNIC Director, Christopher Woodthorpe was in Adelaide during his visit on 8 June. The cooking class had been preceded by a short talk on the benefits of pulses at the school assembly by Peter Semmler from the Australian IYP Committee. Peter, as well as internationally renowned chef Cheong Liew, and Adelaide chefs Gareth Grierson of The Red Door Bakery and Fatema Ayubi of the Parwana Afghani Restaurant were joined by UNIC Director, Christopher Woodthorpe, to each cook a specific dish with a team of students.

UNAA(SA) YOGA DAY FOR HARMONY AND PEACE

Was held on Saturday 2nd April at 10.30 am at Veale Garden, South Terrace
The Event enabled us to Celebrate Harmony Day with people from our Multicultural Society in SA together with Yoga Day which was first celebrated last year.
The Lady Mayoress of Adelaide, Genevieve Haese was our Patron for the day.
We invited members of the Multifaith Community to offer a blessing.
Gill Hicks was MC.
The event will be in partnership with Dru Yoga and it's representative in SA Danyse Crotti

WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY

World Humanitarian Day is a time to recognize those who face danger and adversity in order to help others. The day was designated by the UN General assembly to coincide with the anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Bagdad, Iraq. World Humanitarian Day is also an opportunity to celebrate the spirit that inspires humanitarian work around the globe.

The UNAA(SA) hosts a charity event to celebrate World Humanitarian Day each year

On 29 July 2014, UNAA(SA) hosted a Humanitarian Day Lunch at TAFE Regency Park. Meals were prepared by students for over 85 disadvantaged members of the South Australian community, including guests from Tutti Ensemble. Guests heard from Dr Lynn Arnold, former President of the UNAA(SA) and Premier of South Australia.

As part of the celebrations, UNAA(SA) also presented a scholarship to one TAFE student in appreciation of their contribution to this event.

DISCUSSION EVENINGS

Discussion Evenings provide an informal setting for a samll group to hear from a range of guest speakers and learn about important international issues.

Members and visitors are most welcome.
